Released in 2012 by the National Bank of The Republic of Belarus, this 999 silver coin is dedicated to the European bison, the species of the largest and heaviest mammal on the European continent that was on the brink of disappearing at one time but has overcome the extinction threat. Also known as Bison Bonasus, this herbivore can be found in Poland's Bialowieza National Park.
The obverse of the silver Bison coin bears the Coat of Arms of the Republic of Belarus surrounded by the inscriptions denoting the name of the issuing country and the face value of the coin. The issuing year and metal fineness are also indicated on this side of the coin.
The detailed reverse design features the image of two European bison with sparkling Swarovski crystals inlaid as their eyes. European bison were hunted to extinction in the wild, but, after a while, they have been successfully reintroduced from captivity into several European countries. The bison’s survival in the wild depends on identifying suitable habitat for establishing their populations by introducing new herds. The reverse of the Bison Bonasus coin includes the legends indicating the animal’s name in Belarusian and Latin. This Belarus release of 2012 will undoubtedly become a nice gift for all nature-lovers.
