The Land Down Under series by the Perth Mint of Australia showcases the brightest moments of Australia’s ancient cultures, discovery, enviable lifestyle as well as its iconic landmarks and scenery. The second issue in the popular coin program, this 2013 proof collectible of 99.9% pure silver is dedicated to the didgeridoo, an aboriginal wind instrument invented by Indigenous Australians of northern Australia about 1 500 years ago.
The obverse of the silver coin carries the effigy of Her Majesty Elizabeth II surrounded by the legends indicating the Queen’s name, the name of the issuing country and the face value of the silver coin.
The stunning reverse design features a colorful outback scene of mountains and the sunset, with an Australian playing the didgeridoo, framed within a map shape of Australia. Considered one of the world's oldest musical instruments, it is made from a tree branch, usually eucalyptus, hollowed out by termites. The didgeridoo is almost unique in the world of music for its playing technique called circular breathing. This means the player is able to breathe while producing continuous sound. Issued with the mintage limited to 5 000 pieces, the Didgeridoo coin comes housed in a unique Australian map shaped latex case with a stylized shipper.
