Another issue in the captivating Butterflies series of silver coins bears the title “Large Blue” and is dedicated to one of the most beautiful butterflies in the world which was on the brink of extinction a few decades ago.
The obverse of this silver butterfly coin represents the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Around the effigy, there are the inscriptions indicating the Queen’s name and the face value of the Niue coin. There are also the legends denoting the name of the issuing country and the issuing year against the background of a stylized enlarged piece of a butterfly wing.
Revealed on the reverse, there is an excellently crafted colored the Large Blue butterfly against the background of the Sanguisorba officinalis bushes. This unique butterfly is remarkable for its deep blue upper wings with the arch of black spots and wing edges fringed with black on its upper forewing. Thanks to the pad printing technique the image on the coin displays the genuine colors of the butterfly. To the right of the image, there is the inscription denoting the Latin name of the insect.
